The Psalidi wetland is a brakish marsh created by two torrents flowing into the coastline of Psalidi. The marsh is connected to the sea through a natural water duct created by dirt and reeds. Water is retented in the marsh throughout the year.
Fairly close to the city (4 kilometers eastwards) its covers an area of approximately 85-100 hectares. During the Italian occupation, the wetland was used as a salt lake for the production of salt. Today among the rich fauna of the wetland one may find water-turtles flamingos and herons. The swamp is a wild life reservoir under the protection of the Greek state and the Natura convention (SPA-GR4210027).
